Plywood is considered the premium option for cabinet boxes. Its strong material and solid-core employs several layers of wood plies or veneers at varying angles for stability and rigidity. Many cabinet makers offer plywood as an upgrade for top-of-the-line cabinet box material but here, it's standard. We want our cabinets to be as strong and as durable as possible.

MDF is an engineered wood product made from wood fibers which are pressed and bonded together. Like particleboard, it's susceptible to water damage and it's also very heavy, adding to the overall weight that's suspended from the hanging rails on the back of the cabinet. It is much lower in quality and is much cheaper. It is definitely not the best choice for cabinets, although it is better than particle board. You will find this used in many mid-level cabinet brands.

Particle board is widely used to make cabinet boxes and other components. It is an engineered wood product which is manufactured from wood particles, such as wood chips, sawmill shavings, or even saw dust, and is held together by a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded.
